Robert J. Gariano
Bob Gariano founded Robert Gariano Associates in 2004 to concentrate on providing clients with tailored
executive recruiting and development services at the senior operating and Board level. The firm is based
on the principles of close attention to client needs, broad access to a variety of candidate sources, and
the evaluation of final candidates based on the operating experience of the recruiter leading the search.
Search Experience:
For ten years before founding his own firm, Bob was the Industrial Sector Leader
for a global recruiting firm with 33 offices in 22 countries. As Sector Leader, he led the team that
tripled the firm’s global presence in the automotive, manufacturing, distribution, electronic hardware,
and defense markets.
Bob was also a member of that firm’s CEO and Board of Directors Practice. He personally recruited
Chief Executive Officers for such notable public companies as PerkinElmer, Goodyear, Federal Mogul,
Suntron, Federal Signal, and Midway Games. He also placed senior operating executives or Board members
at United Technologies, Wesco International, Saint Gobain, Owens Corning, Honeywell Allied Signal, Eaton,
TRW Automotive, DuPont, Elkay Manufacturing, Tribune Companies, General Cable, SPX, WMS Gaming, Brunswick,
Manitowoc, Tyco, and the Software Engineering Institute. In addition, he has recruited a number of
talented individuals for other public and private Board of Director assignments. During ten years
of executive search, Bob successfully recruited over 175 senior executives.
Operating Experience:
From 1973 to 1988, Bob was with GE’s Plastics Business Group, most recently
as General Manager of the Lexan Division, the company’s largest and most profitable engineering
materials business with sales over $1.5 billion. Prior to running the Lexan Business, he served
in a series of general management, marketing, technical, and strategic planning assignments in the
United States, Canada, and Europe. These responsibilities included General Manager of GE’s Automotive
Application Center, Managing Director of GE-Canada, and Director of Planning for GE Europe.
Bob was recruited from GE in 1988 to join W.W.Grainger, Inc as Group Vice President and Executive
Officer of the new Specialty Distribution Group. At Grainger he assembled, via acquisition roll-up
and greenfield startup, a series of six industrial distribution businesses with revenues of over
$1 billion. This effort tripled Grainger’s market value and the businesses he built continue to
account for a significant share of this NYSE traded, $5 billion industrial distributor’s operating earnings.
Corporate Governance and Community Activities: Bob is President of the Chicago Foundation for
Education, a non-profit foundation providing grants to inner city elementary school teachers.
He serves as Area Chairman for Carnegie Mellon’s Alumni Council, is a member of the Board of
Advisors for Carnegie Mellon’s Entrepreneurial Center, and previously served as a Trustee for the
Lake Forest Academy School.

Bob earned a B.F.A. in Industrial Design from Carnegie Mellon University, an M.B.A. in finance
and strategy from the University of Massachusetts, an M.L.A. from the University of Chicago, and an
M.S. in Engineering form Northwestern University. He has also completed post-graduate study in
